A television screen with a billion colors and megapixels. A glimpse into the life and world of someone we will never meet, whose life we can barely relate to and hardly even imagine. Such a vibrant and detailed glimpse, so much so that we can swear that we were actually there and lived it. So much so that we can dream about it. All literally powered by electricity. We throw television sets away after a few months or years use. All of the gizmos and gadgets whirling about inside. All of the precious metals precision shaped within, working together in harmony, feeding off of each other, the whole much greater than the sum of the individual parts.
Magic In Plain Sight
A battery cell in a hybrid vehicle. An energy storage capability in your iphone. Harnessing, translating and holding electricity. Pushing it into just the right places to provide propulsion and wonder. From the imagination of Michael Angelo or Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin or Nikola Tesla. Imagination becoming reality. Keeping our food cold in our home. Keeping our alarm clock in sync to get us up for school to learn about the unthinkable or work to build the unimaginable. The light fixtures to keep our home chic and desirable. We no longer have to rely on a single flame that could bring the whole place down, let alone figuring out how to start it in the first place.
Even in the most undeveloped of first world countries people now have access to mind blowing technology utilizing electricity within to change the world and how we see it. We are so spoiled and don’t even think about it. Instead of worrying about food and water and survival, we concern ourselves with design and style. I’m taking that lamp or light fixture back because it doesn’t look cool enough or my neighbor has a prettier one. Face plates on light switches in different colors and shapes to hide the hole in the wall concealing an electrical conduit running in the background, forgotten. What else have we forsaken? When will we wake up and appreciate the magic and splendor?
